Project type
Terrace House Renovation & Alterations and Additions
Date
2019
Location
Surry Hills Heritage Conservation Area, Sydney NSW
Located within the Surry Hills Heritage Conservation Area in NSW, this project transforms a traditional terrace through a carefully considered contemporary rear extension, new garage and self contained studio. The design responds respectfully to the heritage significance of the existing dwelling while introducing a distinctly modern design language that enhances the way the home is experienced and lived in.
Although modest in footprint, the rear extension feels remarkably generous. This sense of spaciousness is achieved through a combination of minimalist interior planning, abundant natural light, generous ceiling heights and a carefully choreographed connection to a series of landscaped courtyards.
A key aspiration of both the client and the design team was to blur the distinction between inside and outside. Three strategically positioned courtyards bring natural light and greenery deep into the home, while also creating moments of privacy and visual relief throughout the floor plan. Expansive glazing, large picture windows and full-height bi-fold doors dissolve the boundaries between the interior and the landscape, allowing the living spaces to extend seamlessly into the gardens.
These green outdoor rooms become an integral part of the design, connecting the original heritage dwelling with the contemporary addition and enriching the everyday living experience. The result is a home that feels open, light-filled and connected to nature, while respecting the character and scale of its historic setting.
