This project reimagines a traditional cottage through a carefully considered alteration and addition that preserves the character of the original home while introducing a contemporary design expression. The design retains the existing cottage as the primary streetscape element, complemented by a new rear extension and first floor addition that respond to the evolving needs of modern family living.
The contemporary addition is defined by clean, sculptural forms and a warm, natural material palette inspired by the relaxed Australian coastal lifestyle. Timber cladding, textured brickwork, exposed concrete and integrated landscaping work together to create a timeless and inviting design composition that contrasts with, yet complements, the original cottage.
A key design objective was to create light-filled, open-plan living spaces with a strong connection to the garden. Expansive glazing and carefully framed openings maximise natural light while seamlessly extending the living areas outdoors, enhancing the sense of openness and encouraging year-round indoor–outdoor living.
The first-floor addition is carefully positioned above the new rear extension to minimise its visual impact from the street, allowing the original cottage to remain the defining element. The result is a home that respectfully celebrates its streetscape while embracing a contemporary coastal aesthetic, delivering warm, functional spaces designed for modern family life.
