Set within the Surry Hills Heritage Conservation Area, this project adds a light-filled contemporary extension to the rear of a classic Sydney terrace.
The brief was simple: create a new addition that feels distinctly of its own time, while respecting the character of the original heritage home. At the front, the house keeps its traditional gabled roofline and chimney intact. At the rear, a crisp, contemporary form takes over, clad panelling and glass and clearly legible as new work.
A key feature is the angled roof over the upper level, shaped specifically to capture light and channel it into the new upper-floor addition, keeping the interior bright throughout the day.
Downstairs, full-height glazing opens the living space out to a private landscaped garden, anchored by a beautiful mature tree retained on site.
This design was approved under a Design Excellence criteria, reflecting the quality of the addition and the thoughtful way it balances heritage character with contemporary living.
